Introduction

I was born in West Virginia and have lived there all my life except for eight years in which I lived in different places throughout Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona working for the USAF.  Although I loved, much about my life in Phoenix, AZ, I knew that, for me, West Virginia was the right place to raise children.  I wanted my kids to be barefoot in the country, climbing trees, and “catchin’ crawdads in the crick” just the way I used to.  So, after those adventurous years in the Southwest, I moved back to Appalachia in hopes of becoming a school teacher and starting a family. I met Albani my first day back in WV and we were married ten months later.  This is our tenth year together and we now have three children.  These days, I teach English and Theatre at Bridgeport High School and I truly love my job.
I have recently switched to the Digital Media & and New Literacies graduate program because I found that I was enjoying the classes associated with that major, and I felt that, in them, I was encountering ideas that were new to me and beneficial to my own students.  I signed up for this class because I wanted to continue my own journey into some of these “cutting-edge” ideas about how digital media has become a part of our daily lives and education.  To some, my interest in this may seem to conflict with the love of nature that I expressed in the previous paragraph, but to me it does not.  To me, an ideal society would balance respect for the natural world with the development of technology, and would allow one to guide the other.

This video entitled "Literacy is Like Velcro" reflects my current attitude toward literacy.  I would be interested to see what my classmates and instructor have to say about it: Literacy Is Like Velcro

This Dilbert comic by Scott Adams illustrates one attitude that many educators have toward digital media:

Here Dilbert's boss reflects the current state of technology in many schools: Let's just acquire the technology so that we can say we have it, so that we look good to the public... We don't need to have a real educational goal or use for it.

  1. Jared,
I am happy that you found your true passion in life in teaching. Also, that is wonderful that you changed your major to something that you were finding beneficial and actually using within your classroom. Too often teachers get stuck in their old and own ways and the only individuals that miss out are the students. It's very nice to meet you!

  2. Jared! It is good to see you in this class too. And I just learned a whole bunch more about you. I knew you had one little one but I didn't know you had 3. You also have a lot in common with my husband who served in the USAF from 1991-1995 (Active) 1995-2000 (Inactive). Clinton stretched him out an extra year. He also served in WA state and AZ.

    1. Hey! Cool. I got out in 1999, but Clinton almost kept me in a few extra months because of Bosnia, etc. The whole conflict cleared up about three weeks before my out date, and I got to separate and start my college education.

  3. Jared we get to have 2 classes together this summer. I completely agree with you in raising children in the country. I am not from WV but grew up in a very small town in NY and would love to one day raise my children in the country!

  5. Funny aside, BTW: I *almost* used the Velcro video myself.. it's a great illustration of how communication (well, GOOD communication) affects so many areas... nice choice!

  6. Hi Jared! I'm thrilled that you have switched to Digital Media, New Literacies and Learning! Your video title Literacy is Velcro reflects a New Literacies Studies perspective because it acknowledges that literacy is more than decoding and encoding print based text but that involves the ability to learn and move between Discourses (ways of being in the world) and Identity (Who you are or how you want to be in the world)! The examples provided in the video demonstrate why providing student with real world problem based learning environments is more effective creating strong readers and writers than approaches that focus on teaching skills outside of their context of use!

The Dilbert cartoon is so depressing accurate (it's especially true in Higher Ed too).

I love Arizona! Spend every Thanksgiving in Carefree outside of Phoenix!

    1. I remember Carefree. Thanksgiving is a nice time to be in Phoenix, too. Not too hot... and certainly not cold.

I lived in Phoenix, and Surprise. The desert there was almost like another planet compared to WV.

  8. That is great that you are choosing a master's degree in digital media. Many classrooms have teachers that lack knowledge in using technology and I find it fantastic that you want to increase effective technology use in the classroom. Very nice to meet you!

  9. Hi Jared!
You have led an interesting life up to this point. Arizona is one of the few states my son has yet to race in but I would love to go! I love the theater of high schools and I am sure you work with some amazingly talented and creative minds! Good luck this semester :)

  10. Jared-
How exciting to get to explore living in other states! I have always wanted to travel and try living in new places, however, I love being so close to my family! (I have a sister that lives just a few houses down from me) I am glad you have found a graduate program that challenges you and helps you improve as an educator! Good luck this semester!

  11. Hi Jared,

I'm glad that you came back to WV. What kinds of things did you do when you were out in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas? I've always wanted to go to Texas as I've been to Arizona before. I also agree with your feelings about meshing "outdoor" with new age medias. I think one has to be creative in the ways they incorporate new ideas and methods in the teaching world. Good luck this semester!
